Page Layouts: How many different page layouts do you need?
What is a page layout?
A page layout is essentially a page template meaning there is a set layout to the page. A home page of a website typically has a unique page layout which isn’t replicated anywhere else on the website. A typical wordpress website has at least 4 unique page layouts: Homepage, general pages, blog overview page & blog page. Please note that once a product page layout is created you do not need to create new product page layouts unless new functionality or user cases come into play. A page layout can be replicated multiple times but creating new pages based on an existing layout is significantly less time intensive.
Other pages that typically have a unique page layout are:
- Career pages
- About pages
- Location pages
- History pages
- Products or Services pages
- Case Study or Portfolio overview pages
- Individual Case Study or Portfolio pages

Why isn’t this option available for templated websites?
Templated websites come with already established page layouts. It is possible to add additional layouts to a templated website, but it is not recommended. This would be like adding a second story to a pre-manufactured house. You can do it, but do you really want to sleep under it?
Pages: How many pages is your site going to have?
This calculator assumes that the content will be formatted & styled by the professional designer or developer.
Do you have an existing website?
Please only focus on the main pages that you will be taking with you to your new website such as pages & posts types. You do not need to list pages that will not be on your new website.
Don’t have an existing website?
We recommend that you plan for 5 to 10 pages. Remember you need to create content yourself or pay someone for content so let’s keep it conservative for now.
Don’t know? Use XML Sitemaps to run an analysis on your existing website.
Content: DIY or work with a professional?
Design: What type of user experience do you want?
User Experience & Design includes the design of the website in addition to different levels of website complexity such as sliders, 50% scroll calls to action, transition animations, strong calls to action for lead generation, buttons that jump to a location on the page, & overall polished look of the website.
Why are my options limited?
By selecting a template your designer/developer will be limited to ‘coloring within the lines’ of the template, limiting the extent of changes that can be made.
Inversely, by selecting a custom website design, the professional developer/designer will make sure your website is at least clean & professional. This is assured through a detailed design process which takes into account your design preferences & creates mockups for your approval before going to development.
Brand: Do you need additional design work?
More often than not when a company is developing a website for the first time or redesigning a website they will need to create a brand identity or evolve their existing identity.
Why are my options limited?
Some options have been removed based on if you are getting a custom or templated website. This is due to the presumed level of your business. For example, a company that is investing in a custom website & brand identity will want to make sure that their business collateral is updated with the new/evolved brand. Inversely, it is unlikely that a company that is investing in a templated website will need a professional brand guide compared to a simple brand style tile.
Please Note: The level of design selected directly influences the amount of time spent doing research, crafting sample logos/concepts, number of revisions, etc. A simple logo will vary significantly if you want a simple world class logo compared to a simple basic logo. This extra time & effort is reflected in the estimation based on the level of design you are looking for.
